Heat pump

A heat pump is a device that provides energy from a source of heat to a destination called the “heat sink”. Heat pumps move thermal energy opposite to the direction of spontaneous heat flow by absorbing heat from a cold space and releasing it to a warmer space. A heat pump also uses some external power to transfer energy from the heat source to the heat exchanger.

A household furnace is an appliance installed to provide heat to an interior space through intermediary fluid movement, which may be air, steam, or hot water. Natural Gas is the most common fuel source for modern furnaces in the United States; other common fuel sources include LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), fuel oil, coal or wood. Electrical resistance heating can also be used as a source of heat, especially where electricity costs are low. Modern high-efficiency furnaces can be 98% efficient and operate without a chimney. The amount of waste gas and heat are small enough to mechanically ventilate through PVC pipes. The fuel efficiency of a gas furnace is measured by the AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency).
